Please join us on Zoom on Wednesday June 15 as Elizabeth Evans leads a discussion of Having Our Say (The Delany Sisters’ First 100 Years). This book, a memoir by two African American sisters, was first published in 1993. Both were born in Georgia -- Sadie in 1889 and Bessie in 1891. Their sharp memories show us the post-Reconstruction South and Harlem’s Golden Age in the 1920s and 30s. They also recall the many famous black leaders whom they knew, including Booker T. Washington, and Langston Hughes, WEB DuBois and Paul Roberson. Bessie breaks barriers to become a dentist; Sadie quietly integrates the New York City school system as a high school teacher. This moving portrait sketches the experience of two sisters who love, laugh, and embrace life after one hundred years of living side by side. If you are not already on the Women Reading email list, please contact us at office@westwoodpres.org to be added and receive the Zoom link prior to the meeting.
